Jurassic World (12A)

Directed by Colin Trevorrow
Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan

'Jurassic Park' (1993) was a landmark in SFX and a damn good film that brought dinosaurs to life. After a long break since the sub-par sequels petered out, Jurassic World sees us back in amongst the dinosaurs with new leading man of the moment Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and a couple of teenage boys teaming up to defeat the Indomitus Rex (a genetically modified dinosaur)with precious dino-baddies, the velociraptor and the TRex. The story is the same. Dinosaur theme park, oops, bad idea to screw with nature. Mayhem.
This film is pretty entertaining with some exciting scenes but nothing as memorable as the T Rex terrorising the kids in the original. Its main problem is the dull and cliched characters. Chris Pratt is pretty much the same as in Guardians of the Galaxy but he's not allowed to actually be as funny. Howard has an awful role! Her character is an uptight hardass who spends the entire film being kind of a bitch in high heels. Yes she gets to do a bit of action but as the only female character of note (not counting all the dinosaurs!) she is mostly shrill and annoying. Shame the writers couldn't make their female lead seem like an actual real person instead of a movie cliche!
This film has made an absolute ton of money - dinosaurs are the new superheroes! However, it really was a sure fire thing, as long as it wasn't a total disaster. No disaster here, just a little disappointing. There is no one remotely as interesting as Jeff Goldblum, Dickie Attenborough or Sam Neill, and it lacks the tension and thrill of the original too.
Expect about 4 sequels..!
