The first season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles began with a bang and a great pilot. For me the show worked for several reasons. Lena Headey made a great Sarah, fanboy favourite Summer Glau as terminator Cameron was fabulous and the action and effects were pretty good for TV. The addition of Brian Austin Green as Derek, Kyle Reese's brother sent back from the future was another wise decision. The series has lots of easter eggs for fans of the film franchise with the highlight of season 1 being episode 6, The Demon Hand that features Doctor Silberman and a terrific scene straight from the opening of T2 with Sarah in the psychiatric hospital. The series was shortened due to the writers' strike but the final episode was also highly memorable for its use of Johnny Cash's 'When the Man COmes Along' as terminator Cromartie takes our an entire SWAT team. The show combined the mythology of the Terminator franchise with a deeper exploration of the characters than a film could never do. Headey in particular was a stand out as the haunted, wary Sarah Connor.

Sadly cancelled after this second season, the show never quite fulfilled its potential in this second season. The extra episodes didn't do the show any favours as it was kind of stretched out and a bit laboured at times. Things began well with the tieing up of the cliffhanger from season 1 and Cameron going full on evil terminator. John gets a girlfriend - the annoying Riley, although she proves to be a more interesting character as her past is revealed. Definitely annoying was Busy Phillips as Sarah's pregnant neighbour who only seemed to be there to add a little levity. However, one of the biggest missteps was another traveller from the future, Jessie, Derek's sort of girlfriend. Aussie actress Stephanie Jacobson, so good in BSG but really irritating here! On the other hand, I absolutely LOVED Shirley Manson as Catherine Weaver, another terminator whose motives are unclear. The Gargage singer has a unique look and her lack of acting experience was perfect for the emotinless Weaver, especially in her dealings with her young daughter (well, not HERS, Catherine Weaver's who terminator Manson bumped off.)
The series ended very strongly as Agent Ellison started to close in on Sarah and her crew, with some shocking and tragic losses along the way, and a hell of a finale. So many questions were left dangling so despite a few flaws, I was very sorry this show got cancelled.
